The UPC (Universal Product Code) is the 12-digit barcode scanned at retail checkouts across North America. Structurally, a UPC-A barcode has a fixed layout: a quiet zone, guard bars at each end, six left-side digits, six right-side digits, and the human-readable number printed underneath. The pattern is standardized, so any retail scanner reads any correctly printed UPC-A barcode.

Working left to right, the digits in odd positions (1st, 3rd, … 11th) are multiplied by 3 and added to the sum of the digits in even positions. The check digit is whatever single digit rounds that total up to the next multiple of 10 — the same modulo-10 rule GS1 publishes for all GTIN check digits.

Example with 03600029145: the odd-position digits 0+6+0+2+1+5 = 14, times 3 gives 42; the even-position digits 3+0+0+9+4 = 16; 42+16 = 58.
