A free UPC generator is a tool that turns an 11- or 12-digit number into a scannable UPC-A retail barcode image — computing or verifying the mandatory check digit — without issuing or registering the number itself.
This tool creates a UPC-A barcode from the number you provide. It does not issue or register a GTIN/UPC for retail use.

01Basics
What is a UPC barcode?
The UPC (Universal Product Code) is the 12-digit barcode scanned at retail checkouts across North America. Eleven digits carry the company prefix and item reference assigned by GS1, and the twelfth is a check digit computed from the other eleven — a lightweight checksum that lets any scanner detect a mis-keyed or mis-printed UPC barcode instantly. The free UPC generator on this page handles that check digit for you in both directions, at no cost.
Structurally, a UPC-A barcode has a fixed layout: a quiet zone, guard bars at each end, six left-side digits, six right-side digits, and the human-readable number printed underneath. The pattern is standardized, so any retail scanner reads any correctly printed UPC-A barcode.
This free UPC generator produces the barcode image from a number you supply. It computes or verifies the check digit, but the number itself must come from you — normally from the GS1 organization that licensed your company prefix. A free UPC generator creates the symbol; it never creates the number.
02Step by step
How to use the free UPC generator
From digits to retail-ready UPC barcode in four steps.
- 1
Enter your digits
Eleven digits (company prefix + item number) or a full 12-digit UPC — the free UPC generator accepts both without an account.
- 2
Check the UPC check digit
Eleven digits: the calculated twelfth appears beside the input. Twelve digits: the tool verifies the checksum and reports mismatches instead of fixing them.
- 3
Generate the UPC barcode
The UPC-A symbol renders with the human-readable digits beneath the bars by default.
- 4
Download your UPC barcode as SVG or PNG
Vector SVG for print production; PNG for quick mockups and documents. Bulk mode handles up to 100 UPC numbers per run.
03Comparison
UPC barcode vs registered GTIN
The image and the number are two different things — this tool makes the image.
| UPC-A barcode image | Registered GTIN/UPC number | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The scannable symbol | A licensed, unique product number |
| Comes from | This free UPC generator, from your digits | GS1 (or a reseller) |
| Needed for | Printing the label | Listing on Amazon, retail POS systems |
| This tool | Creates it locally, free | Does not issue or register numbers |
04Deep dive
11 digits vs 12 digits in a UPC barcode
Enter 11 digits and the free UPC generator calculates the missing check digit, shows you the complete 12-digit UPC-A, and encodes it. Enter 12 digits and the twelfth is treated as part of your data: it is verified against the first eleven, and a wrong check digit is an error — the tool will not silently “fix” a number you believe is correct, because that would encode a different product number than you intended.
05Deep dive
How the UPC check digit works
Working left to right, the digits in odd positions (1st, 3rd, … 11th) are multiplied by 3 and added to the sum of the digits in even positions. The check digit is whatever single digit rounds that total up to the next multiple of 10 — the same modulo-10 rule GS1 publishes for all GTIN check digits.
Example with 03600029145: the odd-position digits 0+6+0+2+1+5 = 14, times 3 gives 42; the even-position digits 3+0+0+9+4 = 16; 42+16 = 58. The next multiple of 10 is 60, so the check digit is 60−58 = 2 — producing the UPC barcode 036000291452. This free UPC generator performs exactly that calculation on every input.
06Deep dive
Printing a scannable UPC barcode
Retail scanners are unforgiving, by design. Keep the quiet zone clear on both sides, print the bars at a size matched to your printer resolution, and verify the magnification stays within the range your retailer accepts. The SVG output of this free UPC generator is vector, so the UPC barcode scales cleanly to any label size without the edge blur that causes misreads.

09FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Direct answers to the most common questions about this tool.
01How do I generate a UPC code for free?
Enter your 11 or 12 digits above and press generate — this free UPC generator creates the UPC-A barcode image instantly, with no account and no watermark. To generate a UPC code you only need the number; the image is the easy half, which is why this tool exists.
02Can I create UPC codes for free for my products?
You can create UPC barcode images for free — this free UPC generator does exactly that. What you cannot create for free is the number itself: valid retail UPC numbers are licensed through GS1, and marketplaces verify the number, not just the symbol. Use this free UPC generator for the artwork; use GS1 for the identity.
03Does this free UPC generator give me a real UPC number?
No. It turns a number you already have into a scannable UPC-A barcode image. Licensed UPC/GTIN numbers come from GS1 or an authorized reseller — marketplaces like Amazon and retail POS systems validate the number against GS1 records, not just the barcode image.
04Why is my 12-digit number rejected by the UPC generator?
Almost always a check-digit mismatch — one digit is wrong or transposed. The check digit must equal the modulo-10 checksum of the first eleven digits. Re-enter the number carefully; the free UPC generator reports the mismatch rather than altering your input.
05What if I only have 11 digits?
That is exactly the intended use: the free UPC generator computes the twelfth (check) digit, displays the complete UPC-A number, and encodes the full 12-digit UPC barcode.
06Can this UPC generator make barcodes in bulk?
Yes — switch the free UPC generator to Bulk mode and paste up to 100 numbers (11 or 12 digits each; 11-digit entries are completed automatically). The Excel tool handles up to 500 rows from a spreadsheet column.
07UPC-A or EAN-13 — which UPC barcode do I need?
UPC-A is the 12-digit North American standard; EAN-13 is the 13-digit international counterpart. A UPC-A number can be shown as EAN-13 by prefixing a zero, but this tool currently generates UPC-A symbols only.
08Is the free UPC generator really free for commercial artwork?
Yes. Generating UPC-A barcode images carries no license fee — the symbology is open. The number itself is what GS1 licenses; the symbol this free UPC generator draws from your digits is yours to print, royalty-free and without watermarks.
